Simple Burnt-in Text Effect

Right-click the text layer in the layers palette and go into the Blending Options.
Apply the following layer styles:
• Inner Shadow
• Outer Glow
• Gradient Overlay
Your text should now look like this:

When you’re finished with your text, you can finish it off nicely by copying the whole thing into a separate document, applying Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen then Filter > Render > Lighting Effects with a nice setting.
