Welcome back to PhotoshopPoint! In this Photoshop tutorial I’ll be showing you how to make some nice metallic text, then adding rust to it. Nice and simple effect. See the result below.

Start by creating a new document. Now you’ll want to add in a background that will suit the text effect. I added a simple wood texture to the background, then applied Filter > Render > Lighting Effects. I also applied Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen to bring out the detail a little bit.

Next thing to do is write out your text! This is fairly simple actually Start by getting out your Horizontal Text Tool then write out your text, you can use any color.

In the above image I used the font known as Arial Black, if you’re using Windows you should already have it. I also used a size of 60 pt. So, after you’ve written out your text the way you want it, go into the Blending Options for your text layer by right-clicking the text layer in the layer’s palette and clicking Blending Options. Now apply the following layer styles:

1. Inner Shadow
2. Outer Glow
3. Inner Glow
4. Gradient Overlay

And now your text should look like this:

Now it’s time to add some rust to your text.

Start by creating a new layer. Now reset your colors back to black and white by pressing D on your keyboard. Now apply Filter > Render > Clouds on your new layer.

Create another new layer then do a little brushing with a brown color.

Change the layer mode for your brown brushing layer to Overlay then select your text by holding ctrl and clicking the layer’s thumbnail.

Merge your two layers together (brown brushing and filter clouds) then inverse your selection (Shift+Ctrl+I) then lastly press delete. You should have something like this:

Now apply Filter > Noise > Add Noise to your ‘rust’ layer, using similar settings to mine:

Change the layer mode for your rust layer to Overlay or Soft Light, and if it looks too intense you may want to erase away some of the rust layer with a grunge brush.

In the above image I did do a considerable amount of erasing with a soft grunge brush, so you might want to aswell. You can download some nice and simple grunge brushes from here!
You can finish this off with whatever you might want to add, I just applied Filter > Render > Lighting Effects again, just because it looks so nice.
