Today we will be creating a logo with that trendy Web 2.0 feel. It’s really quite simple once you know the basics. First off, we will need a shiny icon – istockphoto.com is a great source for finding just that. Here is the one I’ve chosen

Wow, we’re already well on our way to having a great logo! Since you’ll be using this for all sorts of branding, it’s best to design at 300 dpi. Create a new document at 300dpi 1800 x 930 with a background color of 373737.

Next we need to create some simple text for the logo name. I’ve chosen to use VAG Rounded Black, but Arial Rounded Bold (think myspace) or Helvitica Rounded Bold (think Skype) will work just fine. In fact, here is a great post listing all the fonts of the trendy Web 2.0 logos for your reference.

Time to create some text. I’ve used the Web 2.0 Name Generator to come up with my company name, Vooba. I’ve used a pretty large font size here, 110pt. Set your color to #7ec43c

Now duplicate your text layer by right clicking in the layers palette and selecting duplicate. Set the duplicated text layer to #9ee060 in the color palette. Next you’ll need to rasterize the type layer by right clicking in the layers palette and selecting rasterize. Still with me? Great! You will now want to grab your Elliptical Marquee Tool (M) and draw an ellipse over the bottom of the duplicated layer.

With the selection made, click delete. You should have something now that looks like this:

Now to create a nice mirrored effect. Again, duplicate your original text layer and then rasterize it. Press CTRL-T to bring up the transformation tool and the right click the layer and select Flip Vertical. Drag the layer directly below your original layer by holding Shift while dragging.

Next, press the Add Layer Mask button and grab your gradient tool. Select a black to white gradient and fill the Layer Mask until you have something like this. Remember, you can press CTRL-Z to undo until you get it right.

Now repeat this process for your icon and you are all set! A catchy name and a catch logo – perfect for your next big web 2.0 application!
