Create Professional Web 2.0 Style Icons in 4 Steps

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed.

Now we are on STEP THREE and in this step I am going to show you how to make the shiny effect that really finalizes the web 2.0 feel!

Get your rounded rectangle tool again and start a new layer. Now draw a white rectangle inside the icon like this:

Now we are just going to grab our eraser tool and choose a 200px soft eraser brush…

With this large eraser chosen you don’t want to use the whole thing, just use the edge of it and start erasing your shape from left to right while holding down shift so you are erasing
an even amount like so:

Keep erasing until you get an effect similar to this:

That little shine adds so much to the icon doesn’t it. I am going to keep going and show you STEP FOUR which will be making a simple reflection for the icon.

To do this we need to duplicate our icon layer by right clicking on the layer and going to “duplicate layer”…

After you do that just drag your newly duplicated layer on your canvas down below your main icon layer like this:

After that we need to flatten the image so when we erase it, like we did to the shiny layer, you will still see the gradient and blending we added to the icon. If you don’t flatten the image, when you erase it the gradient and blending will look different. If you want to experiment with what I am talking about just erase parts of the layer and see what it does. To make this effect look good we still want a hint of the blend options we used.

The easiest way to do this in my version of photoshop is to create a new layer underneath our reflection layer. Draw a little box in it and fill it with a color (in my case black but you won’t see it since it is underneath the reflection).
