Design a Cool Police Badge

4.

Create a new layer then select the badge (hold ctrl and click the layer’s thumbnail.)
Now contract the selection by about 5 pixels (Select > Modify > Contract.)
Selection Contracted
On the new layer fill the selection with any color.

Apply the following layer styles to the smaller badge layer:

  1. Inner Shadow
  2. Inner Glow
  3. Gradient Overlay

And now you should have a cool result like this:

Looking good so far, still needs a few more things though.

5.

Using the text tool, write out the text “Police Force” using all capitals and #d7bb89 as the color.
Text Written
You might get away with copying the layer styles from the metal badge layer to the text layer, but it didn’t quite work out for me.
I used the following layer styles for the text layer:

  1. Drop Shadow
  2. Outer Glow
  3. Bevel and Emboss
  4. Gradient Overlay

Your text should now look like this:

6.

Lastly, using the Custom Shape Tool again, draw a star inside of the badge.
Custom Shape Tool Star
The above star is found in the same shapes set as the police badge. The color I used was #d7bb89.
After drawing your star, copy and paste the layer style from the text layer to the star layer, you might just want to tweak the Drop Shadow/Outer Glow settings.
After Applying Layer Styles
And that’s all for this tutorial. I finished the whole thing off by merging the layers and applying a few nice filters.
