Create a Cool Carbon Fiber Menu
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed.
Now to the carbon fiber. To do this start a new 12X6px canvas and get your gradient tool out:

Start a new layer. Zoom in to 1600% then using your rectangle marquee tool make a selection in the top left quarter of your canvas

Use a linear gradient from black to white

While holding down shift (I am using a windows keyboard) drag your gradient from left to right in your selection

My result from that

Now make a selection in the bottom right quarter of it and do the same thing or you can just copy the other one and move it down to that position.
You should have something like this:

Now go to edit>>define pattern on your menu bar and name it carbon fiber

Now go back to what we were working on. Click back on the first layer we made. We want to make it a selection so we can fill in the carbon fiber over top of it. So with a windows keyboard ctrl+click on the little icon next to your layer

It should make a selection around the shape like this

I am using photoshop CS2 but if you are using photoshop 7 you would need to ctrl+click on the actual layer in your palette not the icon.
Once you have the selection around that layer start a new layer above it.
Get your paint bucket tool

Then in the drop down menu where it normally says “foreground” choose “pattern”

Then choose the pattern we just made and fill in the new layer with it and change its opacity to about 20%
